Spatial Pattern of Populus euphratica Forest Change as Affected by Water Conveyance in the Lower Tarim River

چکیده
To restore declining species, including Populus euphratica and other riparian communities, in the river ecosystem of the lower Tarim River, the ecological water conveyance project (EWCP), as a part of an integrated water resource management plan, was implemented in 2000. The EWCP aims to schedule and manage the water resources in the upper reaches and transfer water to the lower reaches by a series of intermittent water deliveries. The delivered water flows along a modified river channel and nourishes riparian communities by river overflow flooding. Since it began, it has caused a fierce debate over the response of riparian vegetation to the water conveyance scheme. This study focuses on the lower Tarim River, where Populus euphratica forests have undergone watering, due to the EWCP. Twelve Landsat sensor images and one IKONOS satellite imagery acquired between 1999 and 2009 were used to monitor the change in Populus euphratica forests. Bi-temporal change detection and temporal trajectory analysis were employed to represent the spatial pattern of the forest change. Field investigations were used to analyze the driving forces behind forest change from the perspectives of anthropogenic activities and natural forces. The results showed that Populus euphratica forest have been declining in area, which implies that ecological risks have been increased during the watering process. However, forests areas have increased in the regions where the water supply is abundant, and vice versa. OPEN ACCESS

How to Regenerate and Protect Desert Riparian Populus euphratica Forest in Arid Areas
We found that the most suitable flooding disturbance model for regenerating Populus euphratica forest was two to three times per year with a duration of 15-20 days and an intensity of 25-30 m(3)/s. The flooding should take place during the seed emergence to young tree growth stages, and should be based on flooding experiments and data from vegetation quadrats and ecological water conveyance. This study aimed to compare the hydraulic characteristics of different vitalities of Populus euphratica to reveal the differences in their water use strategies and water consumption to provide useful data to scale water use of riparian poplar forests in the lower reaches of the Tarim River, Northwestern China. Our results showed that the sapwood area of P. euphratica could be estimated based on...
متن کاملPhysiological and morphological responses of Tamarix ramosissima and Populus euphratica to altered groundwater availability.
Riparian plants in arid areas are subject to frequent hydrological fluctuations induced through natural flow variation and water use by humans. Although many studies have focused on the success of Tamarix ramosissima Ledeb. in its invaded ranges, its major competitor in its home range, Populus euphratica Oliv., historically has dominated riparian forests where both species occur naturally. Thus...
متن کاملRoot Plasticity of Populus euphratica Seedlings in Response to Different Water Table Depths and Contrasting Sediment Types
Riparian plants in arid regions face a highly variable water environment controlled by hydrological processes. To understand whether riparian plants adapt to such environments through plastic responses, we compared the root traits, biomass allocation and growth of Populus euphratica Oliv. Seedlings grown in lysimeters filled with clay or clay/river sand sediments under inundation and varying wa...

Water resources availability for meeting reservoir storage, water supply diversion, and environmental instream flow requirements must be assessed based on various premises regarding future water uses as well as climatic and hydrological conditions. This study, therefore, investigates the possible association between climate change and water resources variability, and detects the plausible long-...
